Lying face-down with high-flow oxygen may help COVID-19 patients avoid breathing tubes

NCT ID NCT05178212

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looked at 600 COVID-19 patients with severe breathing problems who were treated with high-flow nasal oxygen and asked to lie face-down (awake prone position). The goal was to see if this combination reduced the need for a breathing tube and lowered death rates. Researchers also wanted to find out which patients were most likely to need a breathing tube despite this treatment.

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could confirm that combining high-flow oxygen with awake prone positioning reduces the need for breathing tubes in COVID-19 patients.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a controlled trial, so it cannot prove cause and effect. Results may not apply to all patients or settings.
