Summary

Researchers are testing whether a three-session couples motivational interviewing program helps male couples reduce illicit drug use and behaviors that raise HIV transmission risk. The trial enrolls 360 male couples where at least one partner is HIV negative and at least one has used drugs in the past month. Couples are assigned by chance to either the couples motivational interviewing program or standard couples HIV testing and counseling, and researchers track drug use, sexual behavior, and related health outcomes over time.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
couples motivational interviewing, a three-session behavioral counseling program
What this could lead to
If it works, this could give male couples a short, relationship-based counseling option that lowers drug use and HIV risk together.
What could go wrong
Behavioral counseling trials often show modest effects, and participants may not attend all sessions or may change behavior for reasons unrelated to the program. The results may not apply to couples outside this study group.
