Could a copper ring replace the pill? small study tests safety
NCT ID NCT07666997
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study is testing a new type of birth control: a copper vaginal ring that women insert themselves, like NuvaRing, but without hormones. The ring is meant to prevent pregnancy using copper, similar to a copper IUD but less invasive. Eight women will wear the ring for 28 days, and researchers will check for side effects, comfort, and how well it stays in place.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
copper vaginal ring
What this could lead to
If safe and well-tolerated, this could lead to a new non-hormonal birth control option that women can insert themselves, avoiding side effects of hormonal methods and risks of IUDs.
What could go wrong
This is a very small early safety study with only 8 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The ring may cause discomfort, irritation, or other issues that could stop development.
