Brain training showdown: continuous vs. intermittent feedback in fMRI study

NCT ID NCT07389486

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether continuous or intermittent real-time fMRI neurofeedback is better at helping healthy adults control a brain region called the anterior insula, which is involved in emotions and body awareness. Ninety participants will undergo either real or sham neurofeedback while their brain activity is monitored. The goal is to see which feedback style leads to greater brain changes and improvements in empathy and heartbeat perception.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

real-time fMRI neurofeedback training procedure

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward more effective brain-training methods for regulating emotions and improving empathy.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage study in healthy volunteers, not a treatment trial. Results may not apply to clinical populations, and the training effects might be small or temporary.
