Smart patch could help nurses manage blood sugar in ICU
NCT ID NCT05571397
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) could help nurses manage blood sugar in ICU patients receiving IV insulin. Researchers enrolled 201 adults with high blood sugar or on insulin at Ohio State University. The goal was to see if using the CGM alongside standard finger-stick checks improved time spent in safe blood sugar ranges and reduced low blood sugar events.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Dexcom G6 continuous glucose monitor (device)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that continuous glucose monitors are a practical tool for managing blood sugar in ICU patients, potentially reducing dangerous low blood sugar events and easing nurse workload.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase feasibility study (Phase 1/2) with 201 patients at one hospital, so results may not apply to all ICUs. The device may not be as accurate in critically ill patients, and technical issues could limit its use.
