NCT ID NCT05964010
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study compares two approaches to screening and counseling teens about alcohol and drug use during primary care visits. One approach involves only the teen, while the other includes the whole family. Researchers will follow 2,300 teens and their caregivers for one year to see which method leads to less substance use, better behavior, and improved parent-teen communication.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
behavioral intervention (screening and brief counseling)
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could show that involving the whole family in brief counseling is more effective than counseling teens alone, leading to better ways to address substance use in primary care.
What could go wrong
This is a behavioral study, not a drug trial, so results may be modest. Differences between the two approaches might be small, and findings may not apply to all families or settings.
