Which breathing test helps ICU patients get off ventilators faster?
NCT ID NCT07005505
First seen Jul 02, 2026 · Last updated Jul 02, 2026
Summary
This study compares two methods of spontaneous breathing trials (SBTs) in critically ill adults who have been on a breathing machine for over 24 hours. The goal is to see whether automatic tube compensation (ATC) or pressure support ventilation (PSV) leads to more successful removal of the breathing tube. Researchers will track outcomes like reintubation and death to determine which approach is safer and more effective.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Automatic tube compensation (ATC) and pressure support ventilation (PSV)
What this could lead to
If one method proves superior, it could become the standard approach for weaning patients off ventilators, potentially reducing complications and deaths.
What could go wrong
This is a single-center study, and results may not apply to all ICUs. The difference between methods may be small or not clinically meaningful.
