New prosthetic tech aims to stop sweat and slipping for amputees
NCT ID NCT03900845
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested three different types of lower-leg prostheses to see which one best handles sweat and stays secure in hot, humid conditions. Twenty people with below-knee amputations wore each prosthesis for two weeks during daily activities and then walked on a treadmill in a hot room. The goal was to find a design that reduces skin problems and improves comfort for active amputees.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
prosthetic suspension systems (standard, perforated liner, and air-exchange pump device)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward better prosthetic designs that keep limbs secure and healthy in hot, sweaty conditions.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study with only 20 participants, so results may not apply to all amputees. The devices may not work as well in real-world settings beyond the lab.
