Simple chest squeeze may replace High-Tech ventilator settings

NCT ID NCT07623590

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a simple manual chest compression technique works as well as electrical impedance tomography (a special imaging method) to find the best ventilator pressure for people with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Thirty adults on ventilators will have both methods tested in random order. Researchers will compare the pressure settings and lung collapse percentages from each method over 28 days.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that a simple manual technique works as well as advanced imaging for setting ventilator pressure in ARDS patients.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 30 participants, so results may not apply to all ARDS patients. The manual method may not be as accurate as expected.
