New study aims to find best pain relief for heart surgery patients
NCT ID NCT07498946
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two ultrasound-guided nerve blocks to manage pain after heart surgery through the breastbone. 80 adults will receive one of the two blocks plus standard care. The goal is to see which block reduces opioid use and pain better in the first 24 hours after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Ultrasound-guided nerve blocks (thoracic paravertebral block or bilateral deep parasternal intercostal plane block)
What this could lead to
If one block proves better, it could become the standard for managing pain after heart surgery, reducing opioid use and speeding up recovery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 80 patients, so results may not apply to everyone. Both blocks are already used, so the difference may be small.
