Battle of the pain blocks: ultrasound vs. Video-Guided in lung surgery

NCT ID NCT04579276

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares two methods of giving a nerve block to control pain after lung surgery (thoracotomy). One method uses ultrasound to guide the needle, the other uses a camera inside the chest during minimally invasive surgery. The goal is to see which approach reduces the need for morphine and improves recovery. 180 adults having lung surgery will take part.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Thoracic paravertebral block (pain relief procedure)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that one method of pain block is better or easier, leading to less morphine use and faster recovery after lung surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, single-center study comparing two established techniques, so any difference may not apply to all hospitals or patients. The main risk is that neither method proves clearly superior.
