Can we skip opioids after bone surgery? new study tests a safer pain plan
NCT ID NCT07265557
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This pilot study compares two discharge pain plans for adults after major orthopedic surgery: one with opioids and one without. Researchers want to see if it's possible to run a larger trial that could reduce opioid use. About 100 patients will be randomly assigned to either plan, and the study tracks how well they follow the plan and their pain levels.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
discharge pain medication prescription (opioid-free vs. usual care with opioids)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that an opioid-free pain plan is feasible and effective, potentially reducing opioid dependence after orthopedic surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study (100 people) focused on feasibility, not on proving pain control or safety. Results may not apply to all patients or surgeries.
