Blood pressure drug response varies by ethnicity, study finds
NCT ID NCT02847338
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tested how well different blood pressure drugs work in White, Black, and South Asian people. About 940 adults with high blood pressure took one or two common medicines. The goal was to see if response differs by ethnicity, which could help doctors personalize treatment.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
amlodipine, lisinopril, amiloride, chlortalidone
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors choose the most effective blood pressure medication based on a person's ethnic background, leading to better control and fewer side effects.
What could go wrong
This is a completed Phase 4 study, so results are available, but it only looked at specific ethnic groups and may not apply to everyone. The findings may not change current treatment guidelines immediately.
