Can combining two oxygen devices help patients breathe better?

NCT ID NCT07521254

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two ways of giving breathing support to adults with acute respiratory failure in the ICU. One group gets standard noninvasive ventilation (a mask that helps breathing), while two other groups get that plus a high-flow nasal cannula (a device that delivers warm, moist oxygen through the nose) at different times. The goal is to see if the combination improves oxygen levels and comfort more than the mask alone. The trial will include 75 patients and track results over 24 hours.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) device and noninvasive ventilation (NIV) device

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that combining two breathing support methods helps patients with acute respiratory failure breathe easier and need less time on a ventilator.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 75 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The devices are already in use, so no major new risks are expected, but individual responses vary.
