Could a Two-Drug combo beat whipworm in kids?
NCT ID NCT07661316
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This phase 3 trial tests whether combining two drugs—albendazole and ivermectin—works better than the standard single drug for treating whipworm infection in schoolchildren aged 6 to 15 in Honduras. Participants receive a single dose of either placebo, albendazole alone, albendazole plus ivermectin, or a fixed-dose combination tablet. The study measures cure rates and side effects, aiming to find a more effective treatment for this common intestinal worm infection.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
albendazole and ivermectin
What this could lead to
If successful, this combination could offer a more effective, single-dose treatment for whipworm and other soil-transmitted worms, simplifying control programs in affected regions.
What could go wrong
This is a single trial in one region, and results may not apply elsewhere. The combination may cause more side effects than standard treatment, and cure rates may still be modest.
