New device aims to spare rectal cancer patients from stoma surgery
NCT ID NCT07429110
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a device called ColoSeal ICD, placed during rectal cancer surgery to protect the bowel connection and reduce the need for a stoma (a bag on the belly for waste). About 250 adults aged 22-75 with rectal cancer will be split into two groups: one gets the device, the other gets standard care with a stoma. Researchers will compare major complications and how many people avoid a stoma after 30 days.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
ColoSeal ICD System (a medical device placed during surgery to protect the bowel connection)
What this could lead to
If it works, this device could help many rectal cancer patients avoid a temporary or permanent stoma after surgery, improving quality of life.
What could go wrong
This is a pivotal study but not yet recruiting, so results are unknown. The device may not reduce stoma rates or could cause complications like infection or leakage.
