New study could change how doctors treat blocked colon cancer

NCT ID NCT04450758

First seen Apr 23, 2026 · Last updated Jun 18, 2026 · Updated 10 times

Summary

This study looks at two ways to treat colon cancer that has blocked the bowel. One option is emergency surgery to remove the cancer right away. The other is to first place a stent (a small tube) or create a stoma (an opening in the belly) to relieve the blockage, and then do surgery later. The goal is to see which approach leads to fewer complications and better long-term survival. About 1,000 adults with blocked colon cancer will take part.
