Common gout drug may protect organs during major heart surgery

NCT ID NCT06118034

Summary

This large study is testing if a short course of the anti-inflammatory drug colchicine, taken around the time of heart surgery, can reduce damage to organs like the heart and lungs. It will involve 768 patients undergoing planned heart surgery with a heart-lung machine. Researchers will compare patients taking colchicine to those taking a placebo to see if it lowers complications like irregular heartbeats, lung injury, and death.
