Common Anti-Inflammatory drug could help millions avoid heart valve surgery

NCT ID NCT05162742

Summary

This study is testing whether colchicine, an anti-inflammatory medication, can slow the progression of aortic valve stenosis—a serious heart condition where the main heart valve narrows. Researchers are enrolling 150 patients with moderate but symptom-free valve narrowing to see if daily colchicine reduces calcium buildup and delays the need for valve replacement surgery. If successful, this could become the first medication treatment for this common heart disease that currently requires risky surgery.
