New blood test algorithm could speed up heart failure diagnosis in ER
NCT ID NCT05518396
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
Acute heart failure is a life-threatening condition where the heart suddenly can't pump blood, but its symptoms often mimic other illnesses, causing delays in diagnosis. Researchers developed a computer algorithm called CoDE-HF that combines a blood test (NT-proBNP) with patient information to estimate the probability of acute heart failure. This study will test the tool in about 2,000 emergency department patients with shortness of breath to see how accurately it identifies those with acute heart failure.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
CoDE-HF decision support tool (diagnostic test)
What this could lead to
If successful, this tool could help doctors diagnose acute heart failure faster and more accurately in the emergency room, potentially improving patient outcomes.
What could go wrong
This is a validation study, not a treatment trial. The tool may not perform as well in real-world settings or may not reduce delays in care.
