New study aims to stop CMV in kidney transplants
NCT ID NCT07203664
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests two different drug combinations to prevent cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in kidney transplant patients who are at high risk. Thirty adults who are CMV-positive before transplant will receive either tacrolimus plus mTOR inhibitors with early antiviral treatment, or tacrolimus plus mycophenolic acid with standard preventive antivirals. The goal is to see which strategy better prevents CMV disease and monitors immune response.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
tacrolimus, mTOR inhibitors, mycophenolic acid, valganciclovir
What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward a more effective CMV prevention strategy for kidney transplant patients, reducing infection and complications.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial with only 30 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The study is not yet recruiting, and the interventions carry risks like infection or organ rejection.
