New brain stimulator aims to lift depression when pills fail
NCT ID NCT07282678
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a device that sends gentle electrical currents to the brain, automatically adjusting to your brain's own rhythms, to ease depression symptoms. It involves 214 adults who have tried at least one antidepressant without enough relief. Participants will receive either the real stimulation or a sham (fake) version, and researchers will track mood changes over time.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
closed-loop transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) device
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a new, non-invasive brain stimulation option for people with depression who haven't gotten enough relief from medication.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage trial with no phase designation, so results are uncertain. The device may not reduce symptoms better than a sham (fake) treatment, and individual responses can vary.
