Common blood pressure pill may calm ECT side effects

NCT ID NCT04828226

First seen May 29, 2026 · Last updated Jun 06, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested whether giving clonidine before electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) reduces the confusion and agitation that can happen afterward. ECT is a highly effective treatment for severe depression and bipolar disorder, but up to 65% of patients experience post-seizure delirium. The trial involved 130 adults scheduled for ECT at a Swiss hospital, comparing clonidine to a placebo in a triple-blind design.
