Could a cheap blood thinner cut stroke risk in africa?

NCT ID NCT06919835

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether the drug cilostazol can prevent recurrent strokes and heart problems in 1100 recent stroke survivors in Ghana. Participants take either cilostazol or a placebo twice daily for 24 months. The goal is to see if this affordable drug, already used in Asia, can reduce major cardiovascular events in a high-risk African population.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Cilostazol (a blood-thinning drug that helps prevent blood clots)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could provide an affordable and effective way to prevent recurrent strokes in low-resource settings like sub-Saharan Africa.

What could go wrong

This trial is still recruiting and results are not yet available. Previous promising data came mainly from Asian populations, so it may not work as well in Africans. Side effects like bleeding are possible.
