New study tracks why some kids with cerebral palsy suffer pain for months after surgery

NCT ID NCT05764681

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study follows 500 children with cerebral palsy who are having leg or spine surgery. Researchers will track their pain and opioid use for a year after surgery using surveys and sensory tests. The goal is to find out who develops chronic pain and why, so doctors can better prevent it in the future.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors predict which children with cerebral palsy are at risk for long-term pain after surgery, leading to better pain management.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It will not directly improve pain or outcomes for participants, and results may not apply to all children with cerebral palsy.
