Can a simple ultrasound spot stroke patients at risk of choking?
NCT ID NCT04874454
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a laryngeal ultrasound can evaluate vocal cord movement in people who recently had a stroke. Researchers will follow 200 participants for one year to see who develops choking or aspiration pneumonia. The goal is to find a non-invasive way to identify high-risk patients early.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
ultrasound
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors identify stroke patients at higher risk of choking or pneumonia, allowing earlier preventive care.
What could go wrong
This is an early observational study with no treatment being tested. The ultrasound method may not reliably predict complications, and results may not apply to all stroke patients.
