Chicory fiber study seeks to unlock secrets of gut microbe changes
NCT ID NCT06528041
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looks at how a prebiotic fiber from chicory root (inulin) changes gut bacteria in healthy adults aged 18-45. Over 13 weeks, participants take either inulin or a placebo (maltodextrin) and provide stool and blood samples. Researchers track changes in Bifidobacterium and other gut microbes, along with bowel habits, mood, and appetite. The goal is to understand why people's gut bacteria respond differently to the same fiber.

What this could lead to
If successful, this study could reveal how individuals respond differently to prebiotic fiber, helping personalize dietary recommendations for gut health.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage, small study (52 healthy adults) focused on measuring changes, not treating a disease. Results may not apply to people with health conditions.
