Chewing gum may speed gut recovery after surgery, new study finds
NCT ID NCT07425249
First seen Feb 21, 2026 · Last updated Apr 29, 2026 · Updated 7 times
Summary
This study tests whether chewing gum after gastrointestinal surgery helps the gut start working again sooner. About 96 adults having open stomach surgery will either chew gum or not after their operation. The goal is to see if gum chewing reduces the time to pass gas and have a bowel movement, which could mean a shorter hospital stay and less discomfort.
