Can a chatbot help people with asthma breathe easier?

NCT ID NCT05248126

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether a smartphone chatbot called Vik-Asthme can teach adults with asthma how to manage their condition as well as the usual in-person training. 73 adults with asthma were split into two groups: one received standard education, the other used the chatbot. Researchers measured changes in quality of life over six months using a standard questionnaire.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Chatbot-guided patient education (Vik-Asthme app)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that a chatbot is as good as or better than standard in-person training for helping people manage their asthma day-to-day.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study with only 73 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The chatbot might not work as well for people who are not comfortable using smartphone apps.
