C-Section pain pump study aims to cut opioid use

NCT ID NCT05131178

First seen Feb 06, 2026 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 8 times

Summary

This study looks at whether a continuous infusion of the numbing medicine bupivacaine through a pump placed in the incision after a C-section helps reduce the need for stronger painkillers like opioids. About 100 pregnant women having C-sections at the Colorado Fetal Care Center will be randomly assigned to receive either bupivacaine or a saline placebo through the pump. The goal is to see if the bupivacaine pump alone is responsible for lowering opioid use, which could improve pain management and recovery.
