At-Home HPV kits could boost cervical cancer screening in rural areas

NCT ID NCT07294066

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether community health workers can help women in rural North Carolina use at-home HPV self-collection kits to screen for cervical cancer. About 112 women aged 30-64 who haven't been screened recently will receive kits through local organizations. The goal is to see if this approach is feasible and acceptable, and to connect those who test positive with follow-up care.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Human papillomavirus (HPV) self-collection kit

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could make cervical cancer screening more accessible for women in rural areas who are overdue for testing.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study (112 participants) testing feasibility, not effectiveness. It may not lead to widespread use or prove that screening reduces cancer rates.
