Can brain monitors during surgery prevent confusion afterward?
NCT ID NCT06133842
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This observational study is testing whether non-invasive monitors that track brain electrical activity and oxygen levels can help determine the best blood pressure to maintain during major non-cardiac surgery in people over 60. The goal is to see if these monitors can reliably guide blood pressure management to protect brain health and reduce the risk of postoperative delirium. Participants will wear forehead sensors before, during, and after surgery, and complete daily thinking and memory questionnaires.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could help doctors set personalized blood pressure targets during surgery to reduce the risk of postoperative delirium and cognitive decline.
What could go wrong
This is a small observational study (100 participants) that only monitors data without changing care, so it cannot prove that tailored blood pressure improves outcomes. Results may not apply to all patients.
