Blood test may reveal hidden organ damage in sepsis patients
NCT ID NCT06817408
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study at Mayo Clinic is testing whether a simple blood test can measure organ damage and immune system changes in people with sepsis. Researchers will take one extra blood sample from 1,000 patients in the emergency department and use advanced DNA analysis to look for signals of injury and exhaustion. The goal is to see if this test can help predict survival, time in the ICU, and need for treatments like a ventilator or dialysis.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a simple blood test that helps doctors monitor organ damage and immune status in sepsis patients in real time.
What could go wrong
This is an early observational study, not a treatment trial. It may not find clear patterns, and results may not change patient care directly.
