Antibiotic levels measured in lungs of sickest pneumonia patients

NCT ID NCT04171674

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looked at how the antibiotic ceftobiprole moves through the blood and lungs of 12 adults with severe pneumonia who were on breathing machines. Researchers gave a high dose continuously through a vein and took blood and lung fluid samples to measure drug levels. The goal was to find the best dose to fight the infection effectively.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

ceftobiprole (a high-dose antibiotic given continuously through a vein)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors determine the right dose of ceftobiprole for critically ill pneumonia patients on ventilators.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early-stage study (12 people) focused on drug levels, not on proving the drug works or is safe. Results may not apply to all patients.
