Cataract lens color may influence sleep quality

NCT ID NCT02304900

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study looked at 400 people aged 60-90 who had cataract surgery. They received either a white or yellow artificial lens. Researchers wanted to see if the color of the lens affected sleep time, sleep quality, and mood two months after surgery. The idea is that blue light filtering (yellow lens) might change the body's internal clock.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

intraocular lens implant (white or yellow)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could help surgeons choose an implant color that improves sleep and mood after cataract surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a completed study with no phase designation, so results may not be conclusive. The effect of lens color on sleep is still uncertain and may vary by individual.
