Carpal tunnel surgery could spot hidden heart disease risk

NCT ID NCT07644325

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at whether taking a small piece of ligament during routine carpal tunnel surgery can help diagnose transthyretin amyloidosis, a serious condition that often goes unnoticed until it affects the heart. Researchers will compare this new biopsy method to the standard one in 500 adults. If successful, it could make early detection easier and safer.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If this works, it could offer a simpler, safer way to spot early signs of transthyretin amyloidosis during routine carpal tunnel surgery, allowing for earlier treatment.

What could go wrong

This is a diagnostic study, not a treatment trial. The ligament biopsy may not match the accuracy of the current gold standard, and results may not apply to all patients.
