New imaging methods aim to spot dangerous carotid plaque before stroke strikes
NCT ID NCT02748941
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing several advanced imaging techniques to see if they can better predict which people with narrowed carotid arteries are at risk of a stroke. Researchers will compare 45 people who have already had a stroke with 105 who have not, using ultrasound and MRI to examine the plaque in their arteries. The goal is to find the best combination of imaging methods to identify unstable plaque that could cause a future stroke.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could lead to better ways to identify which patients with carotid narrowing are at highest risk of stroke, improving treatment decisions.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage case-control study, not a treatment trial. The imaging methods may not prove reliable enough to change clinical practice.
