New drug combo may quiet dangerous carotid plaques
NCT ID NCT07586540
First seen May 15, 2026 · Last updated May 15, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether adding alirocumab (a monthly injection) to standard statin therapy can shrink dangerous bleeding spots inside neck artery plaques. About 280 people who recently had a mini-stroke or stroke due to a 50-69% blocked carotid artery will receive either alirocumab or a placebo for 26 weeks, with MRI scans to measure plaque changes. The goal is to see if this combination makes plaques less likely to cause future strokes.
