Eye-Opening study: could a simple supplement protect your retina?

NCT ID NCT07314411

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study is testing whether taking a daily carotenoid supplement for 3 months can improve retinal health in healthy adults aged 18-75. Researchers will measure changes in macular pigment, retinal thickness, blood flow, and vision, as well as cognitive function. Participants are randomly assigned to receive either the supplement or a placebo. The goal is to understand if these nutrients can help protect the retina and reduce waste buildup.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

carotenoid supplement (dietary supplement)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could show that a simple daily supplement helps protect the retina and may reduce the risk of age-related vision problems.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial in healthy people, so results may not apply to those with eye disease. The supplement may show no benefit over placebo.
