New hope for myeloma patients with kidney failure: safer CAR t therapy on the horizon
NCT ID NCT06623630
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This early-stage study tests a new conditioning regimen (low-dose total body irradiation plus cyclophosphamide) before CAR T therapy (cilta-cel) in 16 multiple myeloma patients with impaired kidney function. The goal is to see if this approach is safe and feasible for patients who are typically excluded from CAR T trials due to kidney issues.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Ciltacabtagene autoleucel (Carvykti) with total body irradiation and cyclophosphamide
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a safe way to give CAR T therapy to multiple myeloma patients with kidney problems, who are often excluded from such treatments.
What could go wrong
This is a very early, small Phase 1 trial with only 16 people. The new conditioning regimen may be too toxic or not work as well as the standard approach.
