Engineered immune cells take on childhood blood cancers in early trial

NCT ID NCT06173518

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This early-phase trial is testing a new CAR T-cell therapy called AUTO1 (obe-cel) in up to 30 children with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia or B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma that has returned or not responded to treatment. The therapy uses the child's own immune cells, which are modified in a lab to recognize and attack cancer cells. The main goals are to check safety and see how many children achieve complete remission within three months.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

AUTO1 (Obecabtagene autoleucel [Obe-cel]) - a type of CAR T-cell therapy made from the patient's own immune cells

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a new treatment option for children with hard-to-treat B-cell cancers that have come back or not responded to standard therapy.

What could go wrong

This is an early-phase trial with only 30 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. CAR T-cell therapy can cause serious side effects like cytokine release syndrome and low antibody levels.
