Engineered immune cells take on stomach cancer in early trial
NCT ID NCT06623396
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This early-phase trial is testing a new type of immunotherapy called CAR T-cells for people with a specific kind of stomach and esophageal cancer that has spread to the lining of the abdomen. The treatment involves collecting a patient's own immune cells, modifying them in a lab to target a protein called mesothelin on cancer cells, and then infusing them directly into the abdomen. The main goal is to see if the treatment is safe and to find the best dose, with 18 participants expected to enroll.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
M28z1XXPD1DNR CAR T-cells (a type of immune cell therapy)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a new treatment option for advanced esophagogastric cancer that has spread to the lining of the abdomen.
What could go wrong
This is a very early phase 1 trial with only 18 participants, so it is primarily testing safety, not effectiveness. The therapy may cause serious side effects or not work at all.
