Diabetes drug slows kidney decline in High-Risk patients

NCT ID NCT03436693

First seen Jan 09, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 26 times

Summary

This study tested whether canagliflozin, a diabetes medication, could protect kidney function in 308 Japanese adults with diabetic nephropathy (kidney damage from diabetes). Participants took either the drug or a placebo for 104 weeks. The main goal was to see if fewer people on canagliflozin had a 30% drop in kidney filtration rate. Results showed canagliflozin helped slow kidney decline, but patients still need ongoing diabetes and kidney management.
