Could a simple MRI replace kidney biopsies?

NCT ID NCT06202235

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study is testing whether a special MRI technique called MR elastography can detect kidney scarring (fibrosis) in people with early chronic kidney disease. Researchers will scan 200 adults—some with kidney disease and some healthy—and track their kidney function for two years. The goal is to see if this non-invasive method can catch damage early, potentially reducing the need for painful biopsies.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) with elastography

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a non-invasive way to detect kidney scarring early, helping doctors monitor disease without repeated biopsies.

What could go wrong

This is an early observational study, not a treatment trial. The MRI technique may not prove accurate enough to replace biopsies, and results may not apply to all patients.
