Brain scan may reveal Parkinson's before symptoms worsen
NCT ID NCT02488395
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether a brain scan (fMRI) can detect early signs of Parkinson's disease by looking at a part of the brain called the superior colliculus. Researchers compared newly diagnosed Parkinson's patients (not yet on medication) with healthy volunteers. The goal is to find a new way to diagnose Parkinson's earlier.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If this works, it could point toward a new way to diagnose Parkinson's disease earlier, before symptoms get worse.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very small, early study with only 23 people. It's looking for a brain signal, not testing a treatment, so it may not lead to a practical test.
