First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Aug 07, 2026 · Updated 6 times

Summary

This study tests a smartphone app called CALM that teaches veterans with traumatic brain injury and PTSD strategies to improve focus, planning, and self-control. One hundred veterans and a family member or friend will be randomly assigned to use the app or receive brain health education for three months. Researchers will measure changes in anger, impulsivity, and daily functioning.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
CALM mobile app (cognitive rehabilitation: goal management training, smartphone prompts, and memory exercises)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a practical, home-based tool to help veterans with TBI and PTSD better control anger and improve daily functioning.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage trial with only 100 participants, so results may not apply to all veterans. The app requires consistent use, and benefits may be modest or not last long-term.
