Summary
This pilot study tests a new way to help adults aged 50 and older quit smoking. Participants interact with a virtual counselor on a computer, receive nicotine patches and gum or lozenges, and get support from a community health worker who also helps them schedule lung cancer screening. The study will enroll 30 people from a clinic in Baltimore and track how many complete the program and quit smoking over 6 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Nicotine replacement therapy (patches, gum, or lozenges)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this approach could offer a scalable, engaging way to help people quit smoking and connect them to lung cancer screening.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very small pilot (30 people) testing feasibility, not effectiveness. The intervention is complex and may not be acceptable or practical in real-world clinics.
