Breathe away the pain: study tests breathing as needle numbing alternative

NCT ID NCT07172984

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 21, 2026 · Updated 35 times

Summary

This study compares breathing exercises to local anesthesia for pain control during joint injections. About 136 adults scheduled for ultrasound-guided joint injections will be randomly assigned to receive either numbing medicine (with fake breathing instructions) or breathing exercises (with a fake numbing injection). The goal is to see if the breathing method works as well as the standard numbing shot for reducing pain and anxiety.
