Breathe easy: simple breathing technique tested to soothe Pre-Surgery jitters

NCT ID NCT03981731

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether a combination of slow, guided breathing (called cardiac coherence) and a hypnosis session could help women feel less anxious before breast or gynecologic cancer surgery. Fifty-three women participated, practicing the breathing technique several times a day for a week before their operation. The main goal was to see if patients would actually follow the program, not yet to prove it reduces anxiety.

guided breathing technique (cardiac coherence) and hypnosis session

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple, drug-free way to ease anxiety before cancer surgery and improve recovery.

What could go wrong

This was a small, early study with only 53 participants and no comparison group, so results may not be widely applicable. The main goal was to see if patients would stick with the program, not to prove it reduces anxiety.
