Light may replace needle for breast cancer diagnosis

NCT ID NCT06857669

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study is testing whether special light-based scans (photoacoustic imaging and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy) can tell the difference between healthy, benign, and malignant breast tissue. Researchers will scan 90 women with known breast lumps and compare the scan results to standard tissue analysis. If the optical technique works, it could offer a faster, painless way to diagnose breast cancer.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and photoacoustic imaging

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a non-invasive, radiation-free way to diagnose breast cancer, reducing the need for biopsies.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage diagnostic study with only 90 participants. The technique may not be accurate enough to replace standard biopsy, and results may not apply to all breast types.
